Adolescent Counseling Services(ACS)

Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Program, On Campus Counseling Program and After-School Counseling Program
The mission of ACS is to empower teens and their families in our community to realize their
emotional and social potential through counseling and preventive education. ACS does this
through three programs: the Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment (ASAT) Program, the On-
Campus Counseling (OCC), and the After-School Counseling Program. The ASAT Program
provides professional assessment and treatment services for teens and families struggling with
substance abuse and addiction. The OCC Program and After-Schoolt Counseling Program provide
counseling for teens and address a wide range of areas including bullying and harassment.

More About Adolescent Counseling Services(ACS)

What is your agency’s connection to PADACC?
Adolescent Counseling Services (ACS) was one of the founding organizations of PADACC. With programs such as the ASAT Program, a State certified outpatient program open to teens struggling with substance abuse and addiction, as well as the OCC Program and After-School Counseling Program, ACS felt it was important to be part of a collaborative that works to support and ensure the health and safety of teenagers in our community.

What does your agency contribute to PADACC regarding drugs, alcohol, bullying & harassment?
ACS’s ASAT Program provides assessment, outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient treatment
and aftercare services for teens struggling with substance abuse and addiction. The ASAT Program addresses the underlying causes of drug and alcohol abuse, and encourages abstinence and healthy lifestyles for teens. The ASAT staff also offers community education through presentations that cover a range of topics related to drugs and alcohol. ACS’s OCC Program provides free counseling to teens and their families at all five secondary schools in the Palo Alto Unified School District, as well as at Menlo-Atherton High School, Redwood High School, and La Entrada Middle School. ACS also offers evening therapy for teens and families through it's After-School Counseling Program, open to the greater Silicon Valley community. Both of these programs address areas that included bullying and harassment.

What are your agency’s top 3 goals for 2010 – as related to underage drinking and drug use?

  1. 80% of adolescents enrolled in treatment will achieve a minimum of 30 days of sobriety while
    enrolled in the program, as indicated by drug tests;
  2. After completing an assessment, 90% of parents/guardians will report an increased
    understanding of substance abuse and will understand the treatment recommendation of the ASAT Program Treatment Team;
  3. The ASAT Program will increase the number of adolescents or parents attending a prevention or education presentation by 10% each year.

How is your agency measuring progress?
ACS uses the above goals to help measure the progress of participants in the ASAT Program, along with a variety of comprehensive measures to track the recovery process and risk for relapse, including following the Stages of Change Model and monitoring compliance with 12-Step Program homework assignments. The program also mandates ongoing drug testing to monitor an adolescent client’s sobriety. Furthermore, staff interview clients and their family members to record improvements in family relationships, evaluate other presenting issues unique to each client, and evaluate the overall success of the program.

What resources do you think your agency needs in order to achieve its goals?
We need to continue to work with other organizations and the PADACC to support teens and families in our community dealing with substance abuse and addiction. Also, working with the collaborative and other organizations to provide prevention education for parents and teens on the dangers of drug and alcohol use is vital to ensure the safety and well being of teenagers in our community.
