American Red Cross - Palo Alto Area Chapter Safe Ride Program

The mission of Safe Ride is to decrease the number of teens that would otherwise drink and drive or ride in an unsafe situation. It is a program for teens, run by teens, that provides free, safe, and confidential rides home on Friday and Saturday nights during the school year. Teen volunteers staff nights, answer phones and drive Red Cross vehicles. There is an adult volunteer present during each operating night who supervises and provides guidance.

Safe Ride empowers teens to make smart and safe decisions that save lives.

More about the Palo Alto American Red Cross

What is your agency’s connection to PADACC?
The Red Cross Youth Programs, Safe Rides coordinator is a member of PADACC. PADACC members volunteer often as the adult supervisor for Safe Rides.

What were your agency's top 3 goals for 2008 - as related to underage drinking and drug use?
The American Red Cross mission is to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Safe Ride develops youth leadership so that youth can provide this life-saving service themselves. As we increase awareness about the services we provide, we can decrease the number of teens that would otherwise drink and drive or ride in an unsafe situation. We have a goal to aquire another donated car so that we can meet the increasing demand for our services. Another goal is to develop youth leaders in the community.

What services does your agency provide to the community in relation to drugs, alcohol, bullying & harassment?
Safe Ride has the mission to decrease the number of teens that would otherwise drink and drive or ride in an unsafe situation. It is a program for teens, run by teens, that provides free, safe, and confidential rides home on Friday and Saturday nights during the school year. Teen volunteers answer phones and drive Red Cross vehicles. There are adult volunteers present during each operating night who supervise and provide guidance.

We hope to increase awareness about the services we provide so that we decrease the number of teens that would otherwise drink and drive or ride in an unsafe situation. One of our goals is to get another car donated to the program so that we can meet the increasing demand of our services.

How is your agency measuring progress?
Safe Ride measures service delivery (i.e. number of calls and rides given) as well as volunteer satisfaction with the program.

What resources do you think your agency needs in order to achieve its goals?

  1. One of our goals is to get another car donated to the program so that we can meet the increasing demand of our services.
  2. Adult volunteer involvement so that we can operate Safe Ride nights.
