Environmental Strategies for Prevention
Trying to educate or treat the individual to stop drinking is important. However, achieving significant decreases in the rates of substance related problems requires more commitment to proven strategies. Prevention efforts must address the conditions that give rise to risky drinking practices. We must change the broader social structures and public policies that shape drinking attitudes and norms. Drinking behavior is patterned by the way alcohol is marketed, sold and distributed, where and when it is consumed, the price of alcohol and the social environment surrounding alcohol use.
