Palo Alto Police Department Parent Project

Our Parent Project program contributes to PADACC by providing a program that teaches parents how to better supervise their children including a chapter on recognizing the signs of drug and alcohol influence and abuse in their children and their children’s friends.

Officer Melda Christmas and Agent Donna Arndt are members of PADACC. They are the facilitators for the Palo Alto Parent Project Program.

More About the Palo Alto Police Department Parent Project

What are the Palo Alto Police Department’s top three goals for 2008-2009?

  1. Provide Spanish speaking facilitators for Parent Project classes

  2. Provide childcare during the classes so parents can attend if they have no other options

  3. Assist other cities in Santa Clara County with the establishment of Parent Project classes in their respective areas

What services does the Palo Alto Police Department provide to the community in relation to drugs, alcohol, bullying & harassment?
We provide parents with a training program that will help them to deal with destructive behaviors in their children. We provide them with no-nonsense tools that they can immediately use to encourage positive behavior and choices and discourage negative behavior and choices.

How is the Palo Alto Police Department measuring progress?
We track calls for services to the police department to measure the reduction in need for police services for intervention. It is our goal to help families to be able to intervene and correct their children’s negative behavior without criminal justice involvement. We also measure progress by the direct feedback we get from our parent participants as well as from the school staff.

What resources do you think the Palo Alto Police Department needs in order to achieve its goals?
We need commitment and support from the school district to provide us with referrals for the Parent Project program. The counselors at the schools know which families would most benefit from our classes. We need them to contact these families and suggest the Parent Project to them. We can then follow-up with these families and tell them about what we have to offer them.
