Palo Alto PTAs (Parent Teacher Assoc.)
The Palo Alto Council of PTAs works with the district staff, the Board of Education, community partners and the PTAs at the 17 schools to support the students and families of the Palo Alto Unified School District and to improve the education, health and welfare of all children and youth. At the middle school and high school levels, the Palo Alto Council PTAs' goals are aligned with the school’s and the committee's goals and include reducing drug and alcohol usage among students, and educating students, parents and staff on alcohol, drugs and related issues. .

More About Palo Alto PTSA

What is your agency’s connection to PADACC?
The council representative attends PADACC meetings and contributes to PADACC projects. The PADACC director and members are an important resource for the five secondary schools in helping to meet our goals of reducing drug and alcohol usage and bullying behavior by students.

What does your agency contribute to PADACC regarding drugs, alcohol, bullying and harassment (DABH)?
The PTAs bring parent and student perspectives, and volunteer hours to PADACC efforts. We provide a connection to the larger PTA community in PAUSD through meetings, communication vehicles such as newsletters and eNews, and word-of-mouth.

What were your agency's top goals for 2010 – as related to underage drinking and drug use?

  1. Advocate for student emotional health and well being.
  2. Reduce alcohol and drug usage overall, and particularly at school dances.
  3. Organize and sponsor a parent ed night on alcohol/drugs.
  4. Send out the "Underage Drinking & Driving" handbook to freshmen parents.
  5. Support surveying of students and reporting back the data to students, parents and staff.
  6. Support a student assembly on alcohol/drugs messages, and a poster campaign of information.

What services does your agency provide to the community in relation to drugs, alcohol,
bullying & harassment?

Gunn PTSA parent education evenings are open to the public. Each year speakers are brought in to discuss different aspects of alcohol, drugs and/or bullying issues. Overall education of students, parents, and staff benefit the community at large.

How is your agency measuring progress?
Student surveys regarding alcohol, drugs, bullying, and related issues have been given nearly every year to track attitudes and usage. Staff and parent surveys have been done on an occasional basis. Student incidences at school dances and other events are given close attention.

What resources do you think your agency needs in order to achieve its goals?
Support from PADACC and PAUSD is crucial, especially for being able to survey students yearly. Reaching students through poster campaigns and assemblies also is an area where support is welcome. Educating parents and staff through speaker programs and marketing materials would also be very welcome support. The PADACC director provides up-to-date information about current trends, issues, programs, etc., about teens and alcohol/drugs, and PADACC member agencies share valuable knowledge, experience and assistance.
