Why Coalitions and Collaboratives?
Past efforts to reduce underage drinking have focused solely on youth education and prevention techniques, often simply trying to convince youth not to drink. Research shows that this model has been only marginally successful.
A new approach aims at changing the social environmental factors that encourage or even enable our youth to use alcohol and other drugs. Coalitions and collaboratives such as PADACC are becoming more successful using environmental strategies.
A community must first identifiy the factors in their environment that contribute the most to underage substance use. When that community is unified, passionate and purposeful, and chooses to work together to create positive environmental change; the solutions to the issues are more successful, targeted, empowering and sustainable.
